Team Spotlight: Masonry
This quarter we’re highlighting the masonry team! Our four-man masonry team at Facilities Management is always working hard to make our campus a better, safer place. Led by the skilled lead mason Wayne Morris, this team focuses on exterior flatwork concrete projects, safety-related concrete panel replacements, and the repair of road and path potholes. Their work is integral to ensuring a safe and accessible environment for the campus community.
The team’s work often involves collaborating with other campus shops, particularly when it comes to utility repairs. They coordinate with Underground Operations Superintendent Jason Balukoff, who ensures that utilities are fixed efficiently while the masonry team steps in before and after to remove and replace the concrete panels. This seamless teamwork ensures that the campus remains safe and functional, minimizing disruptions and enhancing the overall safety of the campus.
Working closely with their supervisor, Christina Reyes, the masonry team has implemented a proactive approach to identifying and addressing safety hazards. Every trip hazard and safety issue reported is immediately documented and prioritized, especially in cases where a person has fallen or raised a concern. This system allows the team to respond quickly, replacing damaged concrete panels and ensuring that any potential hazards are swiftly eliminated.
Innovation is a key aspect of the team’s work, driven largely by Christina’s experience and knowledge. Her deep understanding of campus needs and her ability to access programs and resources have led to new projects and opportunities for the team. An example of this is the construction of a handicap-accessible ramp at Storer Hall. Designed by Christina, the ramp features an exposed aggregate finish that blends seamlessly with the existing architecture, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal while making the building more accessible overall.
For the masonry team, there’s always a deep sense of satisfaction in seeing their projects come to life. The successful completion of projects like the Storer Hall ramp not only improves campus infrastructure but also leaves a lasting mark, making it safer and more welcoming for everyone. The masonry team’s achievements are a testament to their dedication and skill. Thank you for all your hard work!
